Assignment and Dates

 assignment dates

(note: at any time, you can use the side menu on the right to jump between the panes)

  • Use the Assignment & Media section to specify the assignment and provide instructions to your students on how the assignment should be completed
    • Optionally you may use the Add Media buttons (add media buttons) if you have audio, video, image, or file resources to include here
    • You may also choose to add a graphic organizer (click graphic organizer) to provide guidance and a worksheet on structuring/organizing ideas
    • Add a rubric (click add rubric) if your assignment has a grading schematic (note: a PDF file is recommended)
  • Use the Date & Time settings at the bottom of the page to set the opening and closing of each phase (it is generally recommended to allow late submissions, however in small classes this may be more difficult to accommodate due to # of peer assessors; be sure to give strict guidelines to your class so they are aware of any late penalties that may apply)
  • Click create on the right side menu (note: if you need to complete the set-up at a later time, be sure to click save on the right side menu)

Create Phase

create

  • Use the Instruction & Tips text box to provide additional directions for your students (this will be displayed during the create phase)
  • Set the Student Submission Type (note: the default is a written assignment, however you can use peerScholar for audio interviews, video assessments, and many other formats too!)
  • To have your students complete a self-assessment of their submission in the create phase, ensure that enable self-assessment is turned on and then provide a prodding question for quantitative self-feedback (e.g. Overall, how would you rate the quality of your submission?)
  • Click assess to continue to next pane (note: if you need to complete the set-up at a later time, be sure to click save on the right side menu)

Assess Phase

assess

  • Use the Instruction & Tips text box to provide additional directions for your students during the assess phase
  • Set the number of peer assessors, keeping in mind that providing good feedback takes time (generally you would use a low number such as 2-3 for low stakes assignments, and only use a high number 5+ for high stakes assignments)
  • Toggle the peer anonymity during assessment as required
  • Select the type of assessment:
    • Overall comments mean each peer assessor will provide qualitative feedback comments on each submission
    • Inline comments allow peer assessors to embed comments directly in their review of each submission
    • Ratings are used for quantitative feedback (e.g. * out of 10), and be sure to set the ratings scale using the options provided
  • To have your students complete a self-assessment of their feedback provided in the assess phase, ensure that enable self-assessment is turned on and then provide a prodding question for quantitative self-feedback (e.g. Overall, how would you rate the quality of your peer evaluation feedback?)
  • Click reflect revise to continue to next pane (note: if you need to complete the set-up at a later time, be sure to click save on the right side menu)

Reflect/Revise

reflect revise

  • Use the Instruction & Tips text box to provide additional directions for your students during the reflect & revise phase
  • If desired, toggle revise/resubmit to allow your students the opportunity to review their original submission - taking into account the peer feedback - and resubmit for final evaluation (note: when using this feature, ensure that the grade value of this assignment is sufficiently matched to the workload required)
  • To have your students complete an assessment of the feedback provided by their peers, ensure that assess the feedback is toggled on
  • Optionally: Toggle on the reflection option to have your students do one final self-assessment of the improvements made during this phase - be sure to provide reflection instructions (e.g. Briefly reflect on the changes you made to improve your assignment. What steps could you take to improve your writing for future assignments?)

When you are finished setting up your assignment, click save and finish
