Discussion Boards

A DISCUSSION BOARD is an online space where you can interact and discuss course materials with your instructor and classmates.

Every discussion board is organized by FORUMS and then by THREADS. Within each forum, users will post and reply to messages—or threads—on a specific topic. Check your syllabus or ask your instructor if you need any clarification on how to use discussion boards within your course.

ACCESSING THE TOOL
To access your course discussion board:

  1. Click Discussion Board in your Course Menu.

    Or, if you do not see a Discussion Board link:

  2. Click Tools in your Course Menu, then click Discussion Board

N.B. Your instructor may also create links to specific Discussion Board Forums within course areas (eg. Course Materials).

N.B. Only instructors can create the initial Forums within the Discussion Board.  If there are no Forums listed, your instructor may not be using this Tool or they have not been made available yet.

POST A THREAD

  1. Click on the forum you want to post to;
  2. On the forum page, click on the Create Thread button;

  1. On the Create Thread page enter a subject or title for your post under Subject;
  2. Enter your thread text in the Message field;
  3. If your instructor has enabled the attachment feature you will be able to attach a file to your thread by clicking the Attach a File link;
  4. If you are ready to post your message to the Discussion Board click Submit. If you still want to continue working on your post, click on Save Draft. This will save your thread text and allow you to return to the discussion board at a later date to complete you message.

N.B. Please review your post carefully before submitting as most discussion boards will not allow you to edit your own post afterwards, as changing or deleting posts can affect the context of the discussion.  If you find you have made a mistake, just reply to your own post with the correction.

N.B. There is no auto-save when posting in the discussion board.  Please use the Save Draft option frequently if you have composed a lengthy message and want to ensure you do not lose your work due to computer error or network disconnection.

REPLY TO A POST

  1. Hover your mouse on the thread or post you want to reply to;
  2. At the bottom of the message, click the Reply button;

  1. Use the Quote button if you wish to also include the original message text in your reply;

  4. If you are ready to post your message to the Discussion Board click Submit. If you still want to continue working on your post, click on Save Draft. This will save your thread text and allow you to return to the discussion board at a later date to complete you message.
