Notifications Dashboard

The Notification Dashboard contains customizable notification modules with links to Course items or Course information that have been changed, submitted, created, or that have impending due dates based on user enrolment and their role in a Blackboard course and organization. 

Users with multiple enrolments will receive information in modules for all of their classes and organizations.  Users with multiple roles will receive information in modules for all their roles.

  1. Log in to the Portal
  2. Click Notifications Dashboard (top left of your My Page)

    N.B. It may take a moment to load the web page.


INSTRUCTOR MODULE DISPLAY & DESCRIPTION
You will see the following categories displayed:
1. Needs Attention
2. What’s New
3. Alerts
4. To Do

Each category is described below.




1. Needs Attention


The Needs Attention area displays any submitted item by a user for review or grading by the Instructor.

N.B. Notifications included in this module are only visible by those with an Instructor or TA role in Blackboard. Notifications will be removed when the item has been graded.

Categories of the possible notification types:
Tests: the tests and the corresponding users who have submitted the tests.
Assignments: the Assignments and the corresponding users who have submitted files as Assignments.
Surveys: the Surveys and the corresponding users who have submitted the Surveys.
 

2. What’s New


The What’s New module displays the number of unread posts or entries for Communication tools such as:

  • Blog entries
  • Journal entries
  • Discussion Board posts for each forum

What’s New also displays any updated, submitted, or created items, such as:


  • Tests
  • Assignments
  • Announcements
  • Surveys
  • Marks displayed in My Grades (this item is only visible by Students)


Clicking on the number will navigate the user to the related area.

N.B. The item will be removed when the unread posts or entries are viewed.
 

3. Alerts


N.B. The item will be removed when a student submits the item.

a. The Past Due area displays any Assessment, Assignment, or Survey with a past Due Date that has not been submitted by the student.
b. The Early Warning System area displays any rule that the student has violated. Early Warning System rules can be created by the Instructor.




4. To Do


N.B. Notifications included in this module are only visible by users with a Student or Participant role in Blackboard courses and organizations.

a. The What's Past Due area displays any Assessment, Assignment, or Survey with a past Due Date and has not been submitted by the student. Click All Items to display the date that is past due.
b. The What's Due displays information about any Assessment, Assignment, or Survey that contains a Due Date.


RULES FOR ITEMS TO DISPLAY AS NOTIFICATIONS

Items must follow these rules to be viewed in the Notifications Dashboard area for the user views:


  • A notification for that item is set to On in the Notifications Dashboard Settings area.
  • The item or Discussion Board Forum is made Available.
  • The Start Date for the item has passed.
  • The Adaptive Release criteria are met by a Student.
  • An Early Warning System rule is broken by a Student.
  • For an Assessment, Assignment, Survey, or grade item to display in the Alerts area for Instructors, or the To Do area for Students, there must be a Due Date.



SETTINGS FOR THE NOTIFICATIONS DASHBOARD EMAIL NOTIFICATIONS



  1. Log in to the Portal
  2. Click My Places (located in the top banner of Portal).

    a. A pop-up window will appear.
     
  3. Click Edit Notification Settings.
    The page displays General Notification Settings.


In Edit Notification Setting, you will see the following categories:


  • Edit General Settings;
  • Edit Individual Course Settings;
  • Bulk Edit Notifications; and
  • Edit Individual Organization Settings


Each category will be described below.

a. Edit General Settings: Defines the general notification settings such as email format, deletion schedule, and reminder schedule for courses and organizations.

Email Settings: Email messages are sent to users for each notification, however, users do not receive Early Warning System details, unread Discussion Board messages, unread Blog Posts and unread Journal Entries. Within this setting you have the option to:

  • Set the number of days until a notification is automatically deleted.
  • Set the number of days before the Due Date to send an email.
  • If you choose to do either of the above, please be sure to click Submit once changes have been made.

b. Edit Individual Course Settings: Displays the current notification settings for courses in which a user is enrolled.  If you wish to change the notification settings of a particular course, click on course name. The current notification setting for this course will be displayed.



  • Change settings by checking or un-checking boxes adjacent to each type of notification.
  • To receive email notifications, check boxes adjacent to each type of notification.
  • Click Submit.


c. Bulk Edit Notification Settings: Select a set of courses or organizations to update and change the notification settings for them in one step.

To change settings:


  • Click on a course name. Current notification settings for this course are displayed.
  • Change settings by checking or un-checking boxes adjacent to each type of notification.
  • To receive email notifications, check boxes adjacent to each type of notification.
  • Click Submit.


d. Edit Individual Organization Settings: Displays the current notification settings for organizations in which a user is enrolled. Changes to the notification settings for a specific organization can be made.

To change settings:


  • Click on a course name. Current notification settings for this course are displayed.
  • Change settings by checking or unchecking boxes adjacent to each type of notification.
  • To receive email notifications, check boxes adjacent to each type of notification.
  • Click Submit.
