The Assignment tool allows instructors to provide the details of an assignment and enables students to submit their completed assignments online, in their Portal course. Students have access to an assignment for a specific period of time determined by the instructor.

How to Submit an Assignment

Your Instructor or Teaching Assistant will send you information on where in the Course Menu to access the link to submit your assignment.

1. Select the title of the assignment.

Carefully read and follow specific instructions outlined by your Instructor and the due date assigned. For instance, whether you should type your written text directly into the text input box, or attach a file (see Step 2).

2. There are 2 options for submitting your assignment.

A. Text Submission (type into a text input box)
i. Click the Write Submission button and a text input box will appear.

B. Attach Files
i. Click Browse My Computer and locate file on your personal computer
ii. Select the file and click Open. Special characters in the file name will be replaced with underscores "_".
iii. If the assignment requires that you submit multiple files, repeat the steps above for each file you want to attach for this assignment.

In order to attach files, you can also drag files from your computer into the hot spot in the Attach Files area.

Other options on this page

Add Comments allows you to include notes about your assignment to your instructor or TA.
Save Draft allows you to save the changes you have made to the assignment, so that you may return to it. Draft assignments will not be visible to your instructor or TA until they are submitted.

3. Verify again that you are following the assignment instructions from your instructor. Click Submit to send the assignment. Once you click submit you cannot alter your submission.
Note:  A "warning" window will pop up if you have forgotten to attach a file or enter text.

4. After you click Submit, your submitted assignment should appear on the page.
 

Confirm Assignment Submission

After your submission is successful, a green banner will appear at the top of the window (as shown below) that includes a "submission confirmation number.It is highly recommended to take a screen capture of the submission confirmation number and retain it for your records.

Troubleshooting

I can't see an assignment to submit to.

First, check the instructions for accessing the assignment, provided by your instructor, and navigate to the correct location in the course. If you are in the correct locatino and still cannot see the assignment, it is possible your instructor has not yet made the assignment available. Contact your instructor for more information.

I don't know if my assignment went through.

See Confirm Assignment Submission above.

I want to resubmit my assignment.

Once an assignment has been submitted, it cannot be edited. However, you may be allowed to resubmit it.

If your instructor has allowed you to submit an assignment more than once, you will see a Start New Submission function on the Review Submission History page. You access this page by clicking the assignment link in your course.

Check if you can submit an assignment more than once. If you can't but would like to resubmit, you must contact your instructor with this request.
