The University of Toronto has licensed TechSmith Relay as the institutional lecture recording solution.  TechSmith Relay provides basic screen and audio recording, and the resulting videos are stored in and shared from the U of T Libraries’ MyMedia streaming server.*  The version installed on a desktop or laptop can be used to record numerous types of content other than pure lecture, for example; short lecturettes, assignment instructions, demonstrations, guest lectures, student presentations, and many other possibilities.  Below, you will also find an example of the software being used for usability testing.

*Note: Recent changes to MyMedia have affected existing links to videos uploaded to MyMedia. If you are receiving an error message when selecting the current links to videos posted on MyMedia, please update the embed code.

Teaching and Technology: Usability Testing using Lecture Capture software

While lecture capture can be used to capture lecture sessions and the on-screen display of a computer or laptop, Colin Furness, an instructor for INF1005/6 - Usability Assessment Workshop, from the Faculty of Information, used Lecture Capture software as a requirement for a student assignment.  The assignment required students to perform usability testing by capturing users' interactions with online systems, to help identify issues and make recommendations. Students worked together to design tests, interpret results and reflect on the meaning of users' recorded on-screen interactions. Their recordings and recommendations were then submitted to the instructor for assessment. This assignment helped students develop their collaboration skills while learning about usability testing in a hands-on fashion.
